Consumer Privacy Act

About Messages on the CCAC

The California Consumer Privacy Act (CCPA) is a data privacy law that provides certain rights to residents of the State of California. It applies to businesses that do business in California, and that meet one of the defined criteria regarding revenue, data processing, and other factors. It requires offering residents the right to object to the “sale” of their “personal data” (as those terms are defined by law). This possibility must be offered via a prominent link indicating "Do not sell my personal data" and appearing on the homepage of the company (the "seller"). CCPA has a few exceptions to the definition of "sale". Thus, the transmission of personal information (for example, to a "service provider" under the law) is not always considered a "sale".

CCPA requires publishers to post a "Notice of the Right to Object to the Sale of Personal Information" (§ 999.306). Messages on the CCPA are distributed to users located in the State of California (United States) and allow them to exercise their right to object.
